Defiance

We traded in our free Movie Gallery rental for a viewing of the movie "Defiance".

RATED R = NOT FOR CHILDREN

I was thankful for our TV guardian foul language filter but some cussin' was in the translated language captioning.

Mo' basic info:
Paramount Vantage
director: Edward Zwick
starring:
Daniel Craig as Tuvia Bielski
Liev Schreiber as Zus Bielski
Jamie Bell as Asael Bielski
George MacKay as Aron Bielski
Alexa Davalos as Lilka Ticktin
Do you get the idea that it has something to do with the Bielski family? Yes!
The Bielski are four Jewish brothers in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe who escape into the Belarussian forests. They emphasize saving the Jews plus fight the Nazis while building a community, a "Jerusalem in the Forest". Facing terrible odds, from without & within, they struggle to survive.

I found the based-on-a-true-story storyline to be intriguing so had to research.

From a Belarus Guide site comes this quote:
Bielski brothers saved more than 1,200 of their fellow Jews from perishing in the Holocaust - as many as Oscar Schindler, - the largest rescue of Jews by Jews in all of World War II.
My curious self wondered about the youngest brother about whom no information was given at the movie's end so did a little digging & discovered that he also immigrated to the USA, changed his last name to Bell, worked as a truck driver, and was still alive in Florida as of early this year.
Not a bad ending.
